Morning Update – Nov. 22
Meg slept mostly well last night after a rest day. I stayed the night and after changing her dressings I read a chapter of the book we are reading then she did her bathroom break and I read a second chapter. She fell asleep before I finished the chapter, but just the last page or so. That was around 9:30, which is when she has been crashing lately. She woke up a bit after midnight needing to use the bathroom. That was a surprise. Then around 5 she woke up a bit upset. I thought it was in her sleep but I put my hand up on her face and she leaned into my hand and settled down and went back to sleep. This morning she remembered that so I guess she was more awake than I thought.
She was in a pretty good mood this morning and was getting dressed, then started gagging. She threw up and there was not much, but it was bloody. I saved it for the nurse and eventually doctors because you aren’t supposed to have blood in your stomach like that.
The doctors think it’s from her g-tube being removed, which makes a lot of sense. They are starting her on an antacid, more than the tums she is taking, to keep the irritation down while she finishes healing.
She was supposed to have a plastics appointment at 10am, but there were issues with transport. Eventually they decided to walk us over, which was faster than the transport but we had to walk through a parking garage so normally they don’t like to do it. I don’t see the issue. Maybe someone got hurt.
The appointment went well. They are changing wound care slightly to try and get it to heal faster. They want us to start using an ointment that will break down the scab to reveal the flesh underneath and hopefully that will heal well once exposed. They also want us to change dressings twice a day.
Meg has been begging to take a shower for weeks now and the surgeon said she is cleared to do so. He thinks it will help soften the scab and help her heal faster. The plan is to make that one of the dressing changes each day and the other will probably be in the morning. Meg may want two showers a day to make up for not getting one for almost 11 weeks.
Her next big goal is to get home and get cleared for a bath. She is almost done with all her goals.
