Evening Update – Jan. 7
Just realized this is the 7th. That means it has been four months since Megan’s heart attack. She has come so far these last four months.
This time four months ago we didn’t know if she’d even survive. That whole night I don’t know if I slept at all. We were laying on the floor of a family room just outside CVICU. Meg was on a ventilator and ECMO to keep her blood moving and oxygenated. I kept going to see her and pray with her.
This time three months ago Meg had just started coming out of her coma. She had lost her leg and so much muscle that she could barely move her arms. She was still in PICU but was off ECMO and coming off the ventilator but had to do dialysis.
This time two months ago we were preparing to go to rehab. She was off the ventilator and dialysis but was so weak that we had to lift her to the wheelchair and she could only tolerate sitting for short times. She had just started standing with a lot of help and even then just for a minute at the most.
This time a month ago she was in isolation again, recovering from c.diff. She was still weak but getting stronger. She could transfer to and from her wheelchair with little help and did her first car transfer.
Today she decided to stand at the sink to wash her hands because she can.
She still has a long way to go but thinking back over the last four months and I’m amazed at how far she has gone.
