Afternoon Update – Jan. 27th
I had some other pictures I was going to share next week for the next planned update, but Meg had a really big event today that I just had to share.
First some general updates.
Yesterday we did a telehealth call with Megan’s neurologist. If you’ve been following along, last time we met with the neurologist she was going over the MRI. Meg was barely responsive and honestly wasn’t responding for the doctors at all. The neurologist was pointing out the general damage throughout Megan’s brain due to microhemorrhages from the ECMO and the damage due to low oxygen during extended CPR. She painted a very bleak picture and I literally asked her to share any good news. The best the doctor could do is say, “it’s not catastrophic.”
This doctor saw her for the first time since that day and she did a neurological evaluation on her. I kept thinking about “it’s not catastrophic” and kinda wanted to rub it in just how well Megan is doing. The doctor commented on it several times though so I didn’t. She was very happy to see how well Megan is doing and I think will be a very good doctor for Megan going forward. God did amazing work in Megan’s brain and far exceeded all expectations.
We are still waiting to get Megan’s surgery scheduled. Apparently they are working through with the hospital and insurance to get things approved. It’s a bit frustrating, but that is how things go. When she was in a life or death emergency things were done quickly, figure out the insurance later. Now big health wants to put in their opinion and that slows everything else down.
In big news, Megan walked for the first time since September 7, 2021 today. Just a bit short of 5 months out. Since she is down to 1 leg she had to use the walker. In OT or PT they had her use a walker there with a belt to ensure she didn’t fall. Apparently she walked 3 times in a loop. I’m not sure how big the loop was because I was home.
At dinner Meg got to the table and stood up to transfer to a chair. She moved about 2 feet and I commented about how she walked over to her seat. It was a wiggling sort of shuffle and her foot never left the ground.
We take turns to tell about our day at dinner and she went first since it was her day. She just couldn’t contain herself and practically yelled “I walked at therapy today!” It was the first I heard about it so I was kinda blown away.
I asked if Susan took video but she was just getting into the room when Meg was finishing and didn’t get it on video.
After dinner Megan decided to show off and I was able to record a video of her walking with the walker at home.
