Post Surgery Update – Sept. 21

Post surgery update:

Starting with the good news. She is off bypass and is doing mostly well. They also got the tracheostomy done so the ventilator can move from her mouth to her throat. This should make her more comfortable and possibly tolerate less sedation.

She had another cardiac event and they had to shock her heart. This was apparently an issue with CO2 and the ventilator. They shocked her for the first time in over a week and adjusted her meds. Everything appears to be good and she is supporting on her heart now.

They found no viable muscle in her thigh and have removed her leg to the hip now. This is very disheartening because assuming 100% recovery in everything else, her mobility will require crutches or a walker.

This will mean she cannot march. She can play pit or something but will not be able to match and play an instrument at the same time. They also have to go back at least one more time to check muscles in her hip.

I’m grateful she is off bypass and her heart is working now. I’m very sad at what she has lost and continues to lose. My heart is breaking even more because there are things she loves she can’t do now no matter how much she recovers mentally.

I know there will be more good news to come. They will be lowering her sedation again tomorrow and I pray she is more able to tolerate it and start some of her therapy. But right now I feel so very sad for her.
