Morning Update – Dec. 1

Meg is just getting stronger and stronger. She was showing off to her nurse last night by standing bedside and found her balance on the one leg, then started waving her arms in the air and waggling her hips like she was dancing to the music. She lost her balance for a sec, but found it again.

This morning we found out that she had an ultrasound scheduled for 8:30 at about 8am. I was in the room at the Children’s House and had planned on getting over around 9am because Meg was supposed to be doing a shower with OT then getting dressed. I timed my morning to show up and do her dressing change after the shower.

The ultrasound took all morning. They checked all her major veins from her neck to her ankle. They are looking for blood clots. They did find one 6 weeks ago and put her on a blood thinner to break it down. She finished her 6 week treatment today, so they are checking to make sure it is cleared up before taking her off the medicine.

They also did an ultrasound of her kidneys while they were doing it for an appointment with nephrology that will be in the next couple of weeks.

When Meg got back she had to go potty and while she was in there the attending came by to talk about diet changes and testing that would be done for her stomach issues. They said that they want her to go lactose free for a while. Apparently something that can happen is people go through this kind of deal and the part of the intestines that deals with lactose gets banged up. So they often recommend lactose free for a month or so which allows it to recover.

They are also checking for a gluten issue. Apparently this kind of trauma can actually cause gluten intolerance or celiacs. Since Susan and Meg’s younger bro are GF, it could happen. They are doing some tests for that part of it.

Both of these things will make Megan sad. She loves cheese and bread. But if it makes her feel better it’s definitely worth it.

After the bathroom and talking to the doctor Megan asked if she had any PT time left. She had like 20 minutes left so we took her down. I think it’s great she didn’t just want to hop in bed after such a rushed and long morning, but instead wanted to get to PT.
