Morning Update – Dec. 22

Tomorrow is the day we go home!

I’m not sure if I’ll get an update tomorrow, but I’ll try to get a short one in when we actually get home. Once we are home I expect to have fewer updates. I’ll probably try to summarize once a week. Even now there is little change day to day. The progress is slow and steady, but over time we see such big changes.

Last night Megan popped from her chair to the bed. It’s becoming second nature to her and she does it all by herself. We stand near just in case, but she hasn’t needed help. She may stand tall and reach for me or mom just to get a hug, but even that is showing how strong she is getting.

I was marveling at it because I remembered the first time we got her into a chair it took 5 people. It took 4 people lifting the sheet and transferring Megan to get her into the chair and back into the bed. Megan could only tolerate the chair for maybe half an hour before she was done. We got it down to 3 people lifting her and then I was able to have her stand and then lifted her into the chair myself, but it was a lot of effort on my part.

As she got stronger here at Kennedy Krieger Megan was able to stand with assistance and pivot with assistance. They tried some other methods of transferring that she could do herself, but there were problems due to her residual limb and not being able to lift it so it was regularly dragging and getting caught.

At some point in the last two or three weeks she got to the point she could stand and pivot with minimal assistance and in the last week or so she started transferring completely on her own.

It’s been slow progress but considering it once took 5 people (counting her) to get out of bed and into a chair and now it just takes Megan seems huge.

Prayer Needs:

  • Coordinating all her therapies, follow up appointments, and other services
  • Wound recovery
  • General recovery

Talitha cumi, you are standing on your own!
